The D-44 is an obsolete, relatively small-caliber 85-mm field gun often used in an anti-tank role. The barrel was developed from the 85-mm gun used in the T-34/85 tank and is similar to the 85-mm M1939 (KS-12) anti-aircraft gun.
The gun fires high-explosive fragmentation (HE-FRAG), fin-stabilized HE anti-tank (HEAT-FS), capped armor-piercing with tracer (APC-T) and high-velocity AP with tracer (HVAP) projectiles.
