The 5.5-in (140-mm) medium gun was the principal British medium artillery piece during most of World War II, and served in the British army until the late 1970s. It is still in service in other nations.
The gun is mounted on a two-wheel carriage with split box-section trails. Each trail ends in a large recoil spade. The two equilibrators, which can be hydro-pneumatic or spring-loaded, are nearly vertical and are a distinctive recognition feature.
