The M198 155-mm howitzer replaced the M114 as the principal towed 155-mm howitzer in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps; it in turn was replaced in U.S. service by the M777 howitzer. Although the M198 has a leaner profile than the M114, it is 25 percent heavier. The top carriage, which holds the gun tube and equilibrators, is anchored to the cradle's two curved arms; the equilibrators are secured to the top of the cradle arms.
