The 122-mm D-74 competed with the 130-mm M-46 in a late-1940s field gun competition won by the M-46. The D-74 uses the same carriage as the 152-mm D-20 howitzer and has a similar gun shield with a scalloped-top edge. The principal difference is a much longer stepped barrel, which results in the higher muzzle velocity and flatter trajectory needed in a field gun.
