The British Mk 5 4.5-in (114-mm) dual-purpose gun was an older weapon that was originally fitted in some British destroyer and frigate classes. Compared to the later twin-barrel Mk 6, the Mk 5 mount had a shorter barrel, lower maximum elevation and slower rate of fire. The gun's separate charge and projectile were hand-loaded and automatically rammed. Local control of elevation and traverse was accomplished through a joystick; some ships had remote fire-direction systems.
