The M29 was the standard 81-mm or medium mortar in U.S. Army and Marine Corps service as well as several other countries. The weapon was developed from the earlier M1.
The mortar consists of the barrel, mount and baseplate. The barrel is made up of the tube, which is externally threaded at the rear to take a base plug with a ball-shaped projection on its lower end to fit into the socket of the baseplate.
