The Israeli Soltam mortar is adapted from the Finnish Vammas 160-mm M-58 mortar. The M-66 160-mm mortar, with its large size and heavy weight, has a complex carriage system that includes an elevating column and a counterbalance mechanism.
In the firing position, the tail of the breech piece is fitted into the central socket of the base plate and the wheels of the carriage are turned in and locked.
