China developed the 120-mm Type W86 mortar (also known as the Type 86) in the mid-1980s as a replacement for older 120-mm models then in service.
The Type W86 mortar consists of four components: tube, bipod, baseplate and towing cart. It is heavier than the Type 64 and slightly lighter than the Type 55 mortar but has a 36 percent greater firing range. The mortar uses a smoothbore design.
A crew of seven to nine typically operates the W86.
