The F1 is the earliest of the French GIAT 90-mm vehicle gun series still in service and is fitted to a variety of light armored vehicles.

It has been most widely deployed in the AML-90 4 x 4 wheeled armored car, which is in service in more than two dozen countries.

The F1's anti-tank capability is limited to a relatively low velocity high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) projectile. The gun also fires HE, canister (CAN) and smoke projectiles.
