The British 30-mm Rarden automatic cannon first came into service on the Fox 4 x 4 armored reconnaissance vehicle. The design is light in weight with a low trunnion load and low recoil forces, permitting the use of ammunition with a relatively high muzzle velocity in a small vehicle mounting.
The relatively low rate of 90 rounds/minute stems from the objective of keeping the force low.
