The Nudelman-Richter NR-30 single barrel, or 2NR-30 twin-barrel cannon, remains in service with a declining number of former Soviet fighter types. The muzzle flash is commonly deflected both above and below the wings by wingroot baffles.
The short recoil operated cannon is essentially an enlarged version of the 23-mm NR-23, which entered service in 1949. The large 30-mm projectile fired by the gun required a muzzle brake with an integrated flame damper to prevent airframe damage....
