The 120-mm Molot (Hammer) mortar was developed by the Zavod Mayak firm in Kiev for service with the Ukrainian military. Development was spurred by the conflict with Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine's eastern Donbass region beginning in 2014 and the need to re-equip the Ukrainian armed forces with modern gear.
The Molot is a muzzle-loading, smoothbore rigid mortar. A cap is provided at the bore to prevent double charging.
