The Japanese T-4 strongly resembles the Franco-German Alpha Jet and was procured for the similar missions of intermediate jet training and light attack. It was developed as a state-of-the-art, indigenous design powered by locally developed turbofan engines.
The shoulder-mounted wings have 27.5-degree of sweep and anhedral beginning at the roots; the transonic airfoil has yielded a slightly higher maximum Mach number than the Alpha Jet.
