The Shorts Tucano is a modified version of the Brazilian EMB 312 dual-purpose trainer/light attack aircraft. It was selected as the Royal Air Force's replacement in the U.K. for the Jet Provost trainer in March 1985 after a two-year competition.

The Tucano's low-set, double-tapered wing has been further strengthened over that of the EMB 312 and fitted with tip strakes to raise g limits.
