The US-1 was developed by the Shin Meiwa Aircraft Co. (formerly Kawanishi Aircraft Co. and later renamed ShinMaywa) as a short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) aircraft for search-and-rescue (SAR) roles. The amphibious US-1A can be operated from water or land.
