The Il-38 May is an anti-submarine warfare (ASW)/patrol aircraft that resembles the U.S. P-3 Orion in appearance and role. The May is derived from the Il-18 airliner with a lengthened fuselage, wings mounted farther forward, a large undernose radome for search radar, a blister fairing for electronic equipment and a weapons bay.
