The ES-3A Shadow was an adaptation of the carrier-based S-3 Viking maritime patrol aircraft to the electronic intelligence (ELINT) intercept mission. The Shadow was intended to replace the aging EA-3 Skywarrior that entered service in 1960. The ES-3A was the platform for the airborne part of the Battle Group Passive Horizon Extension System (BGPHES).
