The Be-12 Mail, known as the Tchaika (Seagull) in Russia, is one of the few amphibian aircraft remaining in active military service. The Be-12 has been used by Russian naval aviators for maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and search-and-rescue (SAR) missions.
Those remaining in service after 2010 were devoted to SAR operations. The aircraft holds all 45 available records in the International Aeronautical Federation's (FAI) turboprop amphibian and flying boat classes.
