The Mi-4 Hound is a transport and general purpose helicopter, formerly the principal military transport helicopter of the Soviet Union, replaced in service by the Mi-8 Hip.
It was developed and flown in less than a year after Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin demanded a great improvement in helicopter performance. Despite its hurried introduction, the Hound has proven to be versatile and was produced in large numbers in the Soviet Union as well as in China (as the Harbin Z-5).
