The BK-117 began as a joint German-Japanese production effort. It is intended primarily as a civil-use helicopter, though it has been adapted for some military roles.
The BK-117 has a four-blade, hingeless main rotor with a titanium hub and glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) blades. The hingeless design -- known as System Bolkow -- results in greater dihedral stability and control response, as well as lower vibration than fully articulated or semi-rigid rotor systems.
