The Su-17 Fitter-C is a ground-attack fighter with variable-sweep wings. Known in Russian service as the Strizh (Martlet), the Su-17 evolved from the Su-7 Fitter-A fixed-wing strike fighter (see separate database entry) and was designed to improve on the latter's very high takeoff and landing speeds, very short range and low maximum weapons load. The Su-20 and Su-22 are export variants.
