The Japanese-U.S. FSX (fighter, support-experimental) program began as a Japanese effort to develop a successor to the Mitsubishi F-1 strike fighter and bring it into service by the late 1990s.
Beginning in the early 1980s, the Japanese Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) funded the development of several aerodynamic, control and avionics technologies including the Control-Configured Vehicle (CCV) described in "Variants" (below).
