The A-7 Corsair II was a single-engine aircraft that was flown primarily by the U.S. Navy as a carrier-based strike aircraft, and by the U.S. Air National Guard and several other air forces in the close air support role. Bearing a strong family resemblance to the earlier F-8 Crusader supersonic fighter, the Corsair II was chunkier and could lift and deliver a substantial weapons load.
