Samples of the laser energy from the Airborne Laser program's High Energy Laser and
Multi-Beam Illuminator Laser are measured at the Low Energy Laser bench. Above, an
engineer checks the alignment of one of the Low Energy Laser optics at the Lockheed
Martin Space Systems site in Sunnyvale, Calif. The beam control system is designed
to point and fire the laser with sufficient energy to destroy a missile in its boost phase.
