Coast Guard Arctic Patrol Ships To Cost Much More Than Navy Models

The Arctic offshore patrol ships (AOPS) being built for the Canadian coast guard will cost significantly more than vessels of the same design built for the Canadian navy, reports the Ottawa Citizen.

According to data presented to the Canadian Parliament, the two coast guard ships are expected to cost Can$1.5 billion (US$1.2 billion). 

The unit cost is twice that paid by the Navy for six Harry DeWolf-class AOPS. The latter have a unit cost of about Can$400 million (US$318 million).
