The ELN operates mostly in the rural and mountainous areas of north, northeast and southwest Colombia. The group has maintained a longstanding presence in Venezuelan border regions with Colombia but has more recently expanded to the Amazonas, Apure, Bolívar, Guarico, Tachira, and Zulia states.
