The Malaysian military has traditionally been a counterinsurgency force. Since the surrender of the last communist rebels in 1990, the Army has been gradually revamped into a conventional force. The core of the restructured Army is a Rapid Deployment Force (RDF). This air maneuver force consists of about 12,000 troops picked from the Army's existing infantry battalions and the ranger and commando/Special Forces units.
