OVERVIEW
The Republic of Bolivia is a landlocked nation in the Andes mountains of South America with both internal and external defense concerns. Bolivia is bordered on the west by Peru and Chile. Bolivia lost its only coast during the 1879 War of the Pacific against Chile.
Bolivia's internal defense considerations stem from a long tradition of military coups and countercoups. There have been almost 200 coups since Bolivia gained independence from Spain in 1822.
