The army (Maavoimat) is the backbone of Finland's defense force. It is organized around eight brigade level units that train about 26,000 conscripts annually. As such, the units are focused on training and are not necessarily combat ready, though the army does maintain some rapid reaction capabilities. Local forces come under the direction of military district commanders, while the operational units are subordinate to military area commanders.
