OVERVIEW

The primary peacetime mission of the Finnish air force (Ilmavoimat) is defense and surveillance of national airspace. In wartime, air force missions would include fighter interception and ground attack and transport missions in support of the army.

The Finnish air force, headquartered in Jyvaskyla, is organized into three regionally based air commands (Lapland in the north, Satakunta in the west and Karelia in the east), two training and two direct reporting units.
