OVERVIEW

The primary obligation of the Dept. of National Defense and the Canadian Armed Forces is to protect Canada and its citizens from security challenges. Ottawa continues its traditional commitment to participate in international security affairs within a United Nations framework, through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or in coalitions of like-minded countries.
