Background
The Kingdom of Sweden is the largest nation on the Scandinavian Peninsula in both area and population. Sweden's existence as a monarchy was established by the election of Gustav Eriksson Vasa as king in 1523. Parliamentary influence was consolidated through the Constitution of 1719. The current Constitution, enacted in 1974, eliminated the bicameral parliament that had existed since 1866.
