Yemeni territory encompasses several islands in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, including Perim Island (area 300 sq. km, 116 sq. mi) in the Straits of Bab el Mandeb; Kamaran Island (area 181 sq. km, 70 sq. mi) in the Red Sea; and Socotra Island (area 3,500 sq. km, 1,351 sq. mi) in the Indian Ocean. Yemen's geographic location affords it excellent control over the southern approaches to the Red Sea and the shipping lanes astride Perim Island.
