OVERVIEW
The U.A.E. navy was established Feb. 1, 1978, with the incorporation of the Abu Dhabi Defense Force Sea Wing with the other maritime services. The present Emirati navy is primarily a coastal patrol and surveillance force with limited, but growing, interdiction capability. Recent acquisitions of more capable anti-air and anti-submarine warfare ships have increased the navy's blue-water and offshore economic zone patrol capabilities.
