OVERVIEW

Tajikistan is situated in the northern Himalayas of Central Asia. It is bordered to the north by Kyrgyzstan (870 km, 540 miles); to the west by Uzbekistan (1,161 km, 721 miles); to the south by Afghanistan (1,206 km, 749 miles); and to the east by China (Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region) (414 km, 257 miles). Ninety percent of Tajikistan is mountainous, with most of the population living in the larger river valleys.
