OVERVIEW
The Guatemalan army has been assigned the mission of defending the nation's territorial integrity and deterring opponents. In peacetime, the army dedicates itself to education, training, peacekeeping operations and humanitarian support, both domestically and internationally.
In 2004, the army was reformed from a territorial organization to one divided into functional units, or brigades. The army continues to develop a rapid deployment force.
