Lesotho was formed from Basutoland, which opposed being incorporated into South Africa. In 1960, Britain granted Basutoland a new constitution. On Oct. 4, 1966, the nation was renamed Lesotho and became an independent kingdom under King Moshoeshoe II.
In 1970, Chief Jonathan suspended the constitution and arrested the head of the rival Basuto Congress party, who had won elections. King Moshoeshoe II was exiled briefly.
