The Kenyan air force was officially disbanded in 1982 following an attempted coup by high-ranking officers. Air force assets were placed under the control of the Kenyan army, and the new organization was named the 82 Air Force. While the air service has regained some of its operational autonomy, it remains subordinate to the army.
