OVERVIEW
Burundi is a small, densely populated nation in central Africa. It was part of the former Belgian trust territory of Ruanda-Urundi (present-day Rwanda and Burundi). It is bordered to the north by Rwanda, east and south by Tanzania and west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Although it has no access to the open sea, Burundi shares Lake Tanganyika with Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo, necessitating a small patrol force to ensure maritime sovereignty.
